Frequently asked questions.

 FAQs

  • You can text or email me directly, or simply fill out the contact form on the 'Contact' page. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

  • Your first visit is all about establishing your needs and goals so we can get you the best results.

To ensure your treatment is completely safe and effective, we'll begin every session with a confidential discussion about your general health, wellbeing, and any relevant medical conditions. It is vitally important that you are truthful with your answers; this allows me to make sound professional judgements and tailor a treatment plan just for you.

What to Expect Based on Your Booking

If You Booked Rehabilitation Massage: We'll follow the health discussion with a detailed chat about your injury history and the distress you're currently feeling. I will then perform a gentle, hands-on assessment to understand how your body is moving and identify the root cause of the pain. Once we have a plan, we'll get straight into the focused massage treatment.

If You Booked Maintenance or Other Massage: We'll have a brief, focused discussion about your goals for the session—whether you want relief from overall tension, better flexibility, or simply deep relaxation.

    Getting Started

Assuming you are fit and well for treatment, I will step out of the room while you undress and make yourself comfortable on the massage table in the way we discussed for your treatment. Then, we can begin the massage!

  • During your session, the goal is always to deliver a highly effective treatment tailored to your body's needs.

Generally, your massage will involve deep tissue techniques across the main area of concern to promote overall relief and mobility. We'll then perform more concentrated, deeper work on any particular "niggly" spots that are causing you trouble. This is often blended with assisted stretching and specific muscle work to release tension and improve movement, ensuring you get the most out of your time on the couch.

  • This is the most common question I receive! The frequency and duration of your treatment plan are fully dependent upon the reason for your visit, how chronic the issue is, and how quickly your body responds to therapy.

    For Rehabilitation (Injury/Pain):

For clients actively recovering from an injury or specific pain, my general recommendation is to attend weekly sessions until you have experienced a full week completely free of pain. Once you reach that point, we transition to a monthly maintenance schedule to solidify your recovery and prevent recurrence.

    For Maintenance and Wellbeing:

If you are coming purely for preventative care, relaxation, and mobility:

    • A monthly maintenance massage is highly beneficial for almost everyone to manage daily tension and stiffness.

    • If you are a particularly keen sports person or have a physically demanding job, a more frequent schedule (such as every two to three weeks) may be beneficial to keep your body performing at its peak.

We will discuss and agree upon your personalised treatment schedule during your first appointment.

  • Item descriptioneed an Appointment Outside of Standard Hours?

I offer a handful of 'out of hours' appointments each month to accommodate clients who cannot attend during standard times. If you check the booking schedule and find that I am fully booked in the near future, please still get in touch, especially if you are in unexpected discomfort. I will always do my best to see what we can arrange for you.

Please note that due to the increased scheduling difficulty, a surcharge may apply for some appointments booked outside of normal operating times. When you inquire about an off-hours appointment, I will confirm both my availability and the additional cost involved.

  • No. For your safety and effective recovery, I cannot treat an injury in its initial (acute) phase.

    The 72-Hour Rule:

You need to be at least 72 hours post-injury before I can begin working directly on the affected area. This allows your body's natural inflammatory and healing processes to start safely.

    Treatment Approach After 72 Hours:

Your treatment plan will then depend entirely on the nature of your injury:

    • Soft Tissue Issues (Sprains or Muscle Issues): We can adjust techniques to aid healing and reduce tension in the immediate area.

    • Severe Injuries (Ligament Damage or Fractures): I will focus treatment on the areas that have become tight or sore as a result of your body compensating for the injury, rather than directly on the injured site itself.

Remember, every body and every injury is unique. Our goal is always for you to leave feeling refreshed, relieved, and supported in your journey toward full recovery.

  • Your comfort and privacy are paramount. Your massage will take place in a dedicated, private space within my downstairs living room.

    Creating Your Private Zone:

    • Dedicated Space: I have provided a privacy screen to fully separate the massage zone from the general area of the house, ensuring your complete confidentiality.

    • Access: We will enter directly via the patio doors to the rear of the house for easy access.

    • Atmosphere: The treatment area is always kept clean, quiet, and calming, utilizing soft lighting (or natural daylight during the day). Soft, relaxing music may be played, but please let me know if you would prefer a different genre or complete silence—the choice is always yours.

    Your Comfort:

Treatment will take place on a padded, professional massage table. A chair is available for you to use when getting dressed and undressed if you prefer, and there will be ample towels or blankets available to keep you completely covered, warm, and comfortable throughout your session.

  • es, absolutely!

As detailed in my Services section, I completely understand that getting out of the house can be difficult due to injury, childcare, or personal preference.

I am happy to travel to you to provide expert treatment in the comfort and convenience of your own home. Please note that, due to the increased time and travel costs involved, this mobile service is subject to a surcharge.

  • Yes, you are absolutely welcome to bring someone with you!

If bringing a chaperone will make you feel more comfortable or at ease during your treatment, please feel free to do so.

    Important Note on Vulnerable Clients:

For the safety and well-being of all clients, any minors (aged 17 or under) or vulnerable adults must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, carer, or responsible adult for the duration of the appointment.

  • Yes. As with any professional massage therapy, there are certain medical conditions or circumstances (known as contra-indications) that may prevent you from safely receiving treatment, either temporarily or permanently.

While we will cover this in detail during your initial consultation, if you are concerned that you have a medical condition, severe injury, or contagious skin complaint that may prevent treatment, please get in touch prior to attending. This allows us to discuss your specific situation confidentially and potentially save you a wasted journey.

Your health and safety are the top priority.

  • Please feel free to wear whatever you like! Your comfort is the most important thing when you arrive.

During your appointment, we will work together to determine what clothing may need to be removed for effective treatment. Rest assured, I use professional towels and blankets to ensure you are covered, warm, and comfortable at all times. Only the specific area being worked on will be uncovered

  • It is completely normal to feel self-conscious or awkward before your first professional massage, but please know that your comfort is my absolute priority.

If you feel this way, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We can arrange an initial, brief, non-physical consultation without a massage so you can meet me, understand the process more thoroughly, and feel totally at ease before booking your treatment.

My goal is to help you feel comfortable and empowered throughout your entire wellness journey, regardless of your body type, shape, or size (or whether you've shaved your legs!). This is a judgement-free zone.

  • My primary choice for massage is grapeseed oil, which is lightweight, non-greasy, and works well for general muscle work.

However, I am also starting to use a new massage wax oil blend which is scented. This blend gives a comfortable working combination for different techniques while offering a pleasant aromatherapy experience.

Please let me know if there are any particular scents you do not like or are sensitive to. Your comfort and well-being are my top priority, and I will always use the unscented grapeseed oil if you prefer.

Finally, when working on intricate areas like the hands and feet, I will still sometimes use a specific massage wax that provides superior grip and control for detailed, focused work on those smaller joints.

  • The specific techniques used depend entirely on your treatment goal, but all sessions are designed to be effective, safe, and collaborative.

For general maintenance and injury rehabilitation massage, I utilize a core range of techniques, including:

    • Effleurage: Long, sweeping, and rhythmic strokes used for warming up the muscles and promoting overall relaxation.

    • Petrissage: A range of motions involving lifting, squeezing, and rolling the muscle to improve circulation and reduce waste.

    • Kneading: Concentrated, circular movements used specifically to target and break down deep muscular tension.

    • Friction: Focused, deep pressure applied to specific "problem areas" to address chronic tension or scar tissue.

To work the muscles most effectively, I may incorporate body movement and gentle easing stretches into the massage.

    Your Comfort and Safety

If we are working on a problem area or injury, the work may feel intense or even painful at times. Please be assured that I will only ever work within your comfortable threshold, and your safety is my top priority. Communication is essential—please tell me immediately if the pressure is too much so we can adjust it together.

  • Hopefully, you will feel great! The most common experience is feeling enabled, relaxed, and enjoying immediate relief from those long-term (or short-term) aches and pains that have developed.

Following your treatment, however, it is normal to experience a few mild physical sensations as your body processes the deep work:

    • Mild Aches: You may feel slightly achy, similar to the day after a light workout. This is normal and indicates that we have successfully worked through areas of tension and broken down some adhesions.

    • Groggy or Dehydrated: It is common to feel a little light-headed or groggy. This occurs as your body's circulatory system works to remove the metabolic waste and toxins that the massage has helped release.

To minimize these temporary effects and maximize the long-term benefits of the treatment, I strongly recommend you drink plenty of water following your session to aid the flushing process. These sensations should subside within 24 hours.

  • No, absolutely not—none of my treatments are intended to hurt, nor do they need to hurt to be effective.

The primary intention of sports massage is to break down adhesions and relax muscles to allow them to move most effectively. Treating you to the point of severe pain is counterproductive, as it will only cause your body to tense up further and can lead to additional issues.

However, occasionally (particularly if we are treating an injury or an area of long-term tension) the massage may feel uncomfortable or intense, and some areas of the body are naturally more sensitive than others. I will consistently ask for feedback during your session to ensure we always stay within your personal comfort and pain threshold. Your safety and communication are key!

  • I recommend planning your training schedule around your massage to maximise your results.

    Training Before Treatment:

You can certainly train lightly before your appointment. However, if you have a particularly strenuous training session scheduled just before your massage, we may need to adjust your booked session to a lighter post-event style treatment. This is to avoid overloading your central nervous system, which could hinder the benefits you are seeking.

    Training After Treatment:

To allow your body to fully process the therapeutic benefits of the massage and maximise tissue recovery, I strongly recommend you do not train for 24 hours after the treatment. Giving your body this recovery time ensures you get the full value from your session.

  • Yes, I do! I am fully qualified in both pre-event massage to support your entire athletic journey.

    Benefits of Pre-Event Massage:

Pre-event massage is designed to be performed in addition to your general warm-up. It is a dynamic, faster-paced treatment focused on stimulating and warming the muscles further, optimizing your tissue readiness just before competition. It is best performed up to 40 minutes before your event begins.

    Booking a Pre-Event Package:

While many larger events offer this service as part of their package, if you are attending an event that does not, please get in touch to discuss a bespoke package.

Please Note: Due to the nature of this service, all pre-event bookings are treated as mobile visits and will include additional fees to cover travel time and costs to the event location

  • Yes, absolutely! As detailed in my services section I am fully qualified in post-event massage to help accelerate your recovery after a tough challenge.

    Benefits of Post-Event Massage:

Post-event massage is a vital addition to your general cool-down routine. It uses a lighter style of technique than maintenance or rehabilitation massage, focusing on flushing the muscles, removing metabolic waste, and helping to aid overall muscle recovery. This treatment is most effective when performed up to 48 hours after your event.

    Booking Your Recovery Session:

Many events offer this service on site, but if you're looking for a dedicated recovery session, a slightly longer treatment, or missed the window at the event, feel free to book.

If my standard clinic hours do not fit your post-event recovery timeline, please get in touch to discuss a bespoke, one-off appointment. Please note that if this requires an out-of-hours booking or a mobile visit to your home or event, additional surcharges will apply to cover those costs.

  • Absolutely, yes. Your privacy is treated with the utmost professionalism and respect.

Your treatment details, health information, and any personal information shared during your appointment are strictly confidential and will never be discussed with anyone else.

If you ever wish for me to communicate with another party about your treatment (such as a physiotherapist or trainer), I will first require your explicit written permission.

As required by law, I adhere strictly to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), meaning all your personal details are kept secure and confidential. Please refer to my privacy policy for complete details on how your data is handled.

  • Of course! Absolutely, yes.

The term 'sports massage' is a general term for deep tissue massage that is performed with an advanced understanding of how the body moves and functions.

If you have any aches, pains, or 'niggles' in your body, you will benefit greatly from this style of treatment. Everyone spends countless hours engaged in activity, whether that means:

    • Sitting at a desk or driving for long periods.

    • Being constantly on your feet as a shift worker.

    • Handling manual labour and repetitive motions.

    • Caring for children or people as a full-time carer.

These daily activities cause unique physical problems that sports massage is specifically designed to relieve. I can help resolve these issues and also offer professional advice on posture, stretches, and follow-up activities to ensure long-lasting relief.

  • For your convenience, I accept payment via two methods:

    • Cash: You may pay with cash at the time of your appointment.

    • BACS (Bank Transfer): If you wish to pay via bank transfer, please note that payment must be received upfront, at least 12 hours prior to the start of your treatment.

If you have any questions regarding payment, please don't hesitate to ask when you book your session.
